Memory slots 2 or 4

My computer has 4 memory slots with 2gb ddr2 factory installed . 1gb each in slots 1 and 3. Now I'm adding 1gb in 2 pieces of 512 should i drop a 512 in slots 2 and 4 or move my 1gb to slots 1 and 2 leaving 3 and 4 with 512 each. i want the most efficient operation
